Some people already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits are enrolled automatically, while others need to sign up. Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is an alternative way to receive Part A and Part B benefits through a Medicare-approved private plan. Most plans include Part D prescription coverage and may offer additional benefits. Networks, costs, and rules vary.
For most people, it lasts seven months: the three months before the month you turn 65, your birthday month, and the three months after. A special timing rule applies if your birthday is on the first day of a month, and current-employment coverage may affect when you should enroll. Medicare Open Enrollment—often called the Annual Enrollment Period or AEP—runs October 15 through December 7 each year. It is a time to review and, if appropriate, change Medicare Advantage or prescription drug coverage for the following year. Changes generally take effect January 1.
No. Some Medicare Advantage plans may have a $0 plan premium in certain areas, but members generally must keep paying the Medicare Part B premium. Deductibles, copays, coinsurance, provider-network rules, and other costs can still apply.

Some Medicare Advantage plans may include routine dental and vision benefits, including certain eye exams or eyewear allowances. Covered services, provider networks, frequency limits, allowances, and member costs vary by plan and service area.
SilverSneakers may be included at no additional cost with select participating Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plans. It is not included with every plan. Eligibility, participating locations, and available amenities vary.
Some Medicare Advantage plans may provide an over-the-counter allowance for eligible products. Certain plans for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid may also offer OTC benefits, but Medicaid eligibility, allowance amounts, covered items, retailers, and benefit periods vary.
