Medicare Coverage When You Travel or Live in Two States

Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage can work very differently away from home. Original Medicare generally allows care from enrolled providers anywhere in the United States, while Medicare Advantage plans use service areas and provider networks. Emergency and urgently needed care have special protections, but routine care may not be covered outside the network.

How coverage changes away from home

Seasonal residents should check whether the plan permits routine care in both locations, whether a travel or visitor benefit applies, and how long they may live outside the service area. Verify doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, dialysis needs, refills, and follow-up care in each location before enrolling. A permanent move can create a Special Enrollment Period.

Practical checklist

  • Check routine care outside the service area.

  • Carry Medicare and plan cards plus member-services details.

  • Ask how a seasonal address affects eligibility.

  • Review foreign-travel coverage separately.

Emergency and routine care follow different rules

A travel benefit may be limited by time, location, provider, or service. Confirm the rule in the Evidence of Coverage.

Before choosing coverage for two locations

Check providers and pharmacies in both places

Check routine providers, pharmacies, refills, and follow-up care in every location where you spend extended time.

Compare travel-related costs and limits

Compare routine, urgent, and emergency coverage in every place you stay, including provider access and prescription refills.

Use current plan and Medicare travel rules

Foreign travel is separate: Medicare generally provides limited coverage outside the United States, while some Medigap or Medicare Advantage plans may offer defined benefits. Review Medicare’s foreign-travel guidance, the plan’s current Evidence of Coverage, and our guide to emergency care away from home.
