Coverage Comparison

Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage

Both paths provide Medicare coverage, but they organize costs, networks, drug coverage, and extra benefits differently.

Two ways to receive Medicare benefits

Original Medicare

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. You may generally see any provider that accepts Medicare nationwide. A separate Part D plan can provide prescription coverage, and some people add Medicare Supplement insurance to help with certain out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They provide Part A and Part B benefits and often include Part D coverage. Networks, referrals, copays, and extra benefits vary by plan and service area.

Questions to compare

Doctors and hospitals

Original Medicare offers broad provider access. Medicare Advantage plans may use local or regional networks and different rules for out-of-network care.

Prescription coverage

Original Medicare beneficiaries commonly select a separate Part D plan. Many Medicare Advantage plans include prescription coverage in one plan.

Out-of-pocket costs

Compare premiums, deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and annual limits. Costs vary by coverage choice, plan, services used, and eligibility.

Travel and location

Consider how often you travel or live in another state. Provider access outside a plan’s service area may differ except for emergency or urgently needed care.

Extra benefits

Some Medicare Advantage plans include plan-specific dental, vision, hearing, fitness, transportation, or OTC benefits. Availability and limits vary.

Prior authorization

Medicare Advantage plans may require referrals or prior authorization for certain services. Original Medicare has different coverage rules and requirements.

Gala Health does not offer every plan available in every area. Plan benefits, costs, networks, formularies, and availability can change by county and contract year.

There is no single best choice for everyone

The right fit depends on your medical needs, prescriptions, preferred providers, travel habits, budget, and comfort with plan rules. Review the full plan details and confirm provider participation before enrolling.
