How to Check Doctors and Hospitals Before Choosing a Medicare Plan

A plan can look affordable and still be a poor fit if your doctors, hospitals, laboratories, imaging centers, or other facilities are outside its network. Verify the exact clinician and location—not only the medical group—and repeat the check for every plan year because contracts can change.

Why provider verification needs two checks

Start with the plan’s current directory, then call both the provider and the plan. Give the full plan name and contract details from the member materials. Ask about the physician, facility, lab, anesthesiology, radiology, and other professionals who may bill separately. Keep notes with dates and the names of representatives.

Practical checklist

  • List every doctor, specialist, hospital, lab, and facility.

  • Search the exact clinician and location in the plan directory.

  • Call the provider and confirm the exact plan contract.

  • Recheck each plan year because networks can change.

A provider can accept one plan but not another

Provider directories can be outdated, and office staff may recognize a carrier without confirming the exact plan. Verify with both sides.

Before choosing coverage

Confirm the exact clinician and location

Verify the exact physician, practice location, hospital, laboratory, and other facilities involved in your care.

Ask about separately billed services

Confirm each doctor, hospital, laboratory, and facility individually, then compare the costs for in-network and out-of-network care.

Use current provider information

For Original Medicare, use Medicare’s Care Compare and ask whether the provider accepts assignment. For Medicare Advantage, verify the plan’s current network and referral rules. Our guide to provider networks explains the difference.
