Enrollment follow-through
What Happens After You Enroll in a Medicare Plan
After submitting a Medicare plan enrollment, save the confirmation number and verify the requested effective date. Watch for the member ID card and welcome materials, but do not assume silence means the enrollment failed or succeeded. Check status through a verified plan or Medicare contact channel.

When materials arrive, confirm your name, plan, effective date, premium payment method, primary care selection, providers, prescriptions, pharmacies, and any ongoing authorizations. Create the member portal account and replace old cards on the effective date, while keeping prior coverage records for reference.
Practical checklist
Save the confirmation number.
Watch for the ID card and welcome materials.
Confirm effective date and premium payment.
Create the member account and verify prescriptions.
An application receipt is not an effective date
A submitted application or confirmation number is not proof that coverage is active. Verify the effective date before using the plan.
After submitting the enrollment
Verify the card, providers, and prescriptions
Verify the effective date, member card, providers, prescriptions, pharmacy, premium payment, and member account.
Confirm premiums and first-use costs
Check the effective date, first premium, member materials, drug access, provider status, and any services needing prior authorization.
Use official plan and Medicare contacts
If the ID card is delayed, ask the plan for temporary proof of coverage. At the pharmacy or first appointment, use the new card and verify that claims process correctly. Report discrepancies promptly through the plan and Medicare. Keep enrollment confirmations and notices; our January 1 readiness guide provides a related checklist.
