Turning 65
Creditable Prescription Drug Coverage and the Part D Late Enrollment Penalty
Going 63 days or more without Part D or other creditable prescription drug coverage after your enrollment opportunity may lead to a late-enrollment penalty. “Creditable” means the coverage is expected to pay, on average, at least as much as standard Medicare drug coverage. The employer, union, or plan—not a guess based on how good the coverage seems—determines and reports that status.

Keep every Notice of Creditable Coverage you receive. If you are considering delaying Part D, ask the benefits administrator to confirm in writing whether the drug coverage is creditable and what happens when employment or coverage ends. Spouses and dependents should confirm their own status, because enrollment timing is individual.
Practical checklist
Keep each Notice of Creditable Coverage.
Ask the benefits administrator to confirm creditable status in writing.
Compare current coverage with Part D before delaying enrollment.
Retain proof in case Medicare requests it.
Do not rely on a verbal assumption
Do not delay Part D based on a verbal description of employer coverage. Keep the official creditable-coverage notice.
Before delaying Part D
Confirm your personal enrollment timing
Confirm your own creditable-coverage status and keep the written notice; a spouse or coworker’s enrollment timing does not establish yours.
Understand how the penalty is calculated
Compare the penalty risk with each plan’s premium, deductible, formulary, pharmacy network, and medication costs.
Check Medicare’s current penalty rules
Read Medicare’s current explanation of the Part D late-enrollment penalty. The penalty is generally calculated using the national base beneficiary premium and the number of uncovered months, then added to the Part D premium for as long as you have drug coverage. For preparation steps, use our employer coverage checklist.
